It’s Derby Day 2009

Published by juriathe at 9:20 am under Uncategorized Edit This

Horses have been my life since 1969.  I’ve owned over 50 horses myself; I watched Secretariat run; I raced a few of my own horses, and days like today, I miss it.   Imy girls handled race horses for 27 years before I decided to retire.  I still am “aware” of it, though I don’t follow it closely. I tuned in this morning and watched my son involved once again in the life I taught him.  He is an apprentice horse shoer now and  I watched him working with his boss in Larry Jones’ barn on tv this morning.  I watched him make the walk to the Ky. Derby four years in a row, and felt a little envy mixed with pride.  I still like hearing the backside news that never makes headlines, like how Larry Jones sat in Eight Bells’ empty stall last year and cried for an hour.  He was heartbroken over her tragic death.   I hope this year eases his pain over it; you just know the man is having flashbacks to that race and has to be brave to be doing this again.

I may  not be involved in racing now, but I still have it in my heart and I’ll be rooting them all on today, from right here at my computer.  It’s raing in Kentucky, and I love a good mudder, so my choice today is Fresian Fire.
